Practice & how-to

How do I prepare for Ramadan?

To prepare for Ramadan, check the start date on the hijri calendar, set sahur and iftar reminders, plan how much Quran you will read each day, and begin fasting a few voluntary days beforehand.
  1. Check the dateOpen the calendar and look at when Ramadan begins where you are. Knowing it weeks ahead changes how the month starts.
  2. Set sahur and iftar remindersSahur ends at Fajr and iftar begins at Maghrib. Set the reminder for sahur early enough that you can actually eat, not at the last minute.
  3. Plan your readingSet a Quran reading plan for the month. Divided across thirty days, a full reading is a manageable amount each day.
  4. Fast a few days firstThe sunnah fasting days marked on the calendar are the easiest way to get your body used to it before the month starts.
  5. Clear the eveningsDecide now which nights you will pray tarawih and mark them, so the month is not spent deciding.
